Originally part of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), skilled workers in Ontario sought a new way forward—one that offered a different approach to union membership and charted their own path. Their vision for something bold and innovative led, after years of effort, to the creation of the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers in February 1999 in Hamilton, Ontario.
At the time, many unions were focused on the industries of the past. CUSW set out to build a union for the future—one that embraced innovation, evolving skills, and the creation of jobs in emerging and modern sectors.
The founders of CUSW placed democratic values and community engagement at the forefront, establishing a new constitution and strategic plan designed to guide members toward breaking new ground and adopting fresh approaches.
Many of the pioneers who helped build CUSW more than two decades ago remain involved today. Their continued dedication is a testament to the strength of the union and the commitment of its membership, ensuring CUSW remains strong well into the future.
More than twenty years later, CUSW has proven itself as a leading choice for skilled workers seeking a forward-thinking, member-driven labour union in Canada.
