Apprenticeship Prerequisites

If you meet the minimum requirements listed here, after you apply your information will be added to our new applicant database and will be reviewed by the apprenticeship training committees. The apprenticeship training committees will review the applications and make the final decisions on the selection and recruitment process.


Successfull interviewees will be added to the Pre-Select list. Please note that our associated employers will hire directly from the Pre-Select list and each applicant on the Pre-Select list has the opportunity to stay on the list for 1 year.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Assembles, installs, repairs, connects and tests electrical fixtures, control equipment and wiring; plans installations from blueprints; installs conduit, panel boards, switchboxes and other related electrical devices; and tests electrical and electronic equipment for proper function.

The apprenticeship program generally consists of five terms of 1700 hours each. Included in these terms are three periods of trade school sessions held at Community Colleges throughout the province.

In order to qualify, CUSW requires each applicant to the apprenticeship program to possess a Secondary School Diploma including credits in the following subjects:

  • Grade 12 English or French
  • Grade 12 Mathematics  
  • Grade 11 Physics (or higher)
  • One of the following Senior Sciences: Grade 11 Chemistry, Grade 11 Biology or Grade 12 Electrical Shop

or if you are a registered apprentice applicant to the apprenticeship program, you will either have to meet the minimum requirements above or have completed a minimum of one (1) level of trade school.

Climbs, inspects, support and frames poles and towers in a live or dead line environment; installs and removes travelers and transformers; tests equipment on power lines; and various other tasks while working aloft and on the ground.

The apprenticeship program is a four-year program with four levels of trade school held at a powerline technician training facility. In order to qualify, CUSW requires each applicant to the apprenticeship program to possess a Secondary School Diploma including credits in the following subjects:

  • Grade 12 English or French
  • Grade 12 Mathematics

or if you are a registered apprentice applicant to the apprenticeship program, you will either have to meet the minimum requirements above or have completed a minimum of one (1) level of trade school.

For Groundperson position, each applicant is required to possess a Secondary School Diploma.

Repairs, maintains, calibrates, adjusts and installs industrial measuring and controlling instrumentation. 

The apprenticeship program generally consists 8000 hours of combined On-The-Job and In-School training. Included in these terms are three periods of trade school sessions held at Community Colleges throughout the province.

In order to qualify, CUSW requires each applicant to the apprenticeship program to possess a Secondary School Diploma including credits in the following subjects:

  • Grade 12 English or French
  • Grade 12 Mathematics  
  • Grade 11 Physics (or higher)
  • One of the following Senior Sciences: Grade 11 Chemistry, Grade 11 Biology or Grade 12 Electrical Shop
  • 2 year Instrumentation & Control Technician College Diploma

or if you are a registered apprentice applicant to the apprenticeship program, you will either have to meet the minimum requirements above or have completed a minimum of one (1) level of trade school.

Lays out, assembles, maintains and repairs piping that carry water, steam, fluids, gases, chemicals and fuel for heating, cooling, lubricating and process piping systems.

The apprenticeship program generally consists of five terms of 1700 hours each. Included in these terms are three periods of trade school sessions held at Community Colleges throughout the province.

In order to qualify, CUSW requires each applicant to the apprenticeship program to possess a Secondary School Diploma including credits in the following subjects:

  • Grade 12 English or French
  • Grade 12 Mathematics  
  • Grade 11 Physics (or higher)
  • One of the following Senior Sciences: Grade 11 Chemistry, Grade 11 Biology or Grade 12 Electrical Shop

or if you are a registered apprentice applicant to the apprenticeship program, you will either have to meet the minimum requirements above or have completed a minimum of one (1) level of trade school.

Constructs, renovates and repairs structures made of wood, steel, concrete and other materials in the residential, commercial and industrial construction sectors and in related industries.

The apprenticeship program generally consists of four terms of 2000 hours each. Included in these terms are three periods of trade school sessions held at Community Colleges throughout the province.

In order to qualify, CUSW requires each applicant to the apprenticeship program to possess a Secondary School Diploma including credits in the following subjects:

  • Grade 12 English or French
  • Grade 12 Mathematics  
  • Grade 11 Physics (or higher)
  • One of the following Senior Sciences: Grade 11 Chemistry, Grade 11 Biology or Grade 12 Electrical Shop

or if you are a registered apprentice applicant to the apprenticeship program, you will either have to meet the minimum requirements above or have completed a minimum of one (1) level of trade school.

Works on industrial machinery, mechanical equipment and components, including mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, fuel, lubrication, cooling and exhaust systems, and pumps, fans, tanks, conveyors, presses, generators and pneumatic and hydraulic controls.

The apprenticeship program generally consists of four terms of 2000 hours each. Included in these terms are three periods of trade school sessions held at Community Colleges throughout the province.

In order to qualify, CUSW requires each applicant to the apprenticeship program to possess a Secondary School Diploma including credits in the following subjects:

  • Grade 12 English or French
  • Grade 12 Mathematics  
  • Grade 11 Physics (or higher)
  • One of the following Senior Sciences: Grade 11 Chemistry, Grade 11 Biology or Grade 12 Electrical Shop

or if you are a registered apprentice applicant to the apprenticeship program, you will either have to meet the minimum requirements above or have completed a minimum of one (1) level of trade school.

Fabricates and installs both structural and ornamental steel and iron works and components, as well as precast structural concrete members and laminated timber products in all buildings and structures including but not limited to residential commercial, industrial, institutional buildings, towers, bridges and stadiums. 

The apprenticeship program generally consists of three terms of 2000 hours each. Included in these terms are three periods of trade school sessions held at Community Colleges throughout the province.

In order to qualify, CUSW requires each applicant to the apprenticeship program to possess a Secondary School Diploma including credits in the following subjects:

  • Grade 12 English or French
  • Grade 12 Mathematics  
  • Grade 11 Physics (or higher)
  • One of the following Senior Sciences: Grade 11 Chemistry, Grade 11 Biology or Grade 12 Electrical Shop

or if you are a registered apprentice applicant to the apprenticeship program, you will either have to meet the minimum requirements above or have completed a minimum of one (1) level of trade school.

Designs, creates, assembles installs, and repairs sheet metal products. 

The apprenticeship program generally consists of five terms of 1700 hours each. Included in these terms are three periods of trade school sessions held at Community Colleges throughout the province.

In order to qualify, CUSW requires each applicant to the apprenticeship program to possess a Secondary School Diploma including credits in the following subjects:

  • Grade 12 English or French
  • Grade 12 Mathematics  
  • Grade 11 Physics (or higher)

Installs, repairs and maintains piping systems, fixtures and other plumbing equipment used for water distribution, drainage and waste disposal. S
