NEWS
Summary of 2024
The Southwest Executive and members of our unit have had an incredible year, and we are thankful for all the participation. This Unit made a commitment to host monthly meetings and we have fulfilled that, with a combination of meetings in-person alternating months, as well as Zoom only meetings in the off months for the Executive. In person, we have travelled to Petrolia, Brantford, Lucan, Windsor, Sarnia and London. Meeting the needs of our members by coming to them all over the Southwest has proven that we want engagement. It has proven to the members that we are putting in effort in all areas. We will come to you!
Guest speakers have joined us in person and on zoom, including Sonny Goldstein, Calvin Hicks, and Matt Hurley.
Members and family got to enjoy a 30 person booth, food and some swag during the Windsor Spitfire game in January.
A donation to the Ronald MacDonald house was made on behalf of the Southwest Unit by CUSW and the National Executive Board in the amount of $1000.
The Southwest Executives have worked diligently to refine our budget with the National Executive Board.
The 2024 Southwest Chairty Golf Tournament was one for the books! There were 79 players who attended, plenty of food, prizes, and we had a 50/50 draw. $3270 was raised for charity. Everyone who attended had a great time.
During the Hydro One “Power to Give” month with a 2:1 match, the Southwest Unit donated a total of $9810 to the St. Thomas Food Bank. This charity was chosen by the winner of the Golf Tournament 50/50 draw.
A wide variety of new swag, including stickers, toques, hats, sweaters, shirts, etc have been produced and given/sold to our members at events and meetings. This unit prides ourselves on handing out quality swag that is comfortable and made to last.
CUSW 25th Anniversary was celebrated in the Southwest with an event at East Park in London, ON on July 13. There was full attendance of 81 people, in which 37 were children. Members and their families enjoyed a full day at the waterpark, along with many other activities including go carts, batting cages, mini putt, bumper cars, arcade, etc. At the end, raffle took place and one lucky child won a Nintendo Switch Lite.
An election was held in the fall to fill vacant seats on the executive. We gained Shawn Riley and Cavan Simpson in the executive and recorder positions.
12 sponsorships were given out to local kids/adult sport teams, totaling $7500. Some of these included St Thomas Minor Baseball, Hockey Helps the Homeless, Walker Homesites Athletic Club, Lambton Attack Hockey, Petrolia Flyers Juniors, as well as many more!
The first of many Apprentice Orientations was held in London, ON in October. Another will be happening in May of 2025.
Two recruitment sessions were held over the year. One was done by Pauline in June. The other took place in November. Several individuals were interviewed.
The first Family friendly Christmas party happened on November 30, 2024 in Mount Brydges, ON. This was an incredible event for our members and their families, especially those with young children! It was well attended, with 34 adults and 26 children. There were several crafts, lots of treats, a bouncy castle, games, photo booth, and to top it all off, a visit from Santa himself and gifts for each of the children. Everyone left with full tummies and lots of Christmas cheer! We look forward to making this a great new tradition for the members in our Unit!
The best news of all, is that we're just getting started!!
2025 is going to be one of our best years to come!
Great things to come from the Southwest Unit in 2024!
