CUSW Advocate Training 2021

The CUSW Advocate Role: What Can You Expect?

The CUSW Advocate works under the CUSW Equality Policy and Procedures on Discrimination, Harassment and Sexual Harassment.

An Advocate is available to help when there may be an issue between two members, to help mediate and resolve problems before they turn into more significant legal issues that can also result in harmful emotional costs for everyone involved.

For example, if a conflict arises between Members along the lines of bullying or harassment, a Member may request that an Advocate be assigned each person, to help work through the issue.

 

"You are able to step in—some people don't realize what they are doing. But if you point it out you would be surprised how many people will correct a (negative) behaviour. Some things like, cultural issues, where behaviours are misunderstood—they can be easily cleared up."

IMPORTANT: Please note that in registering for the 2021 CUSW Advocate Training, you commit to completing the prerequisite course(s) referenced below as well as attending each of the eight sessions listed further down.

 


Prerequisites

Interested Members will need to commit to completing the Respectful Workplaces Facilitator Certificate in Alliance Learning (approximately 90 minutes) and to participating in a series of live online training sessions scheduled for the dates listed below.

All of these sessions will be held online (Zoom) from 7:30 – 9:00 PM on the following dates:

  • May 25, 2021 (joint session with Human Rights Representatives)
  • June 8, 2021
  • June 22, 2021 (joint session with Human Rights Representatives)
  • Sept 14, 2021
  • Sept 28 (joint session with Human Rights Representatives, Workplace Stewards and HS Reps)
  • Oct 26 (joint session with Human Rights Representatives)
  • Nov 9
  • Nov 23 (joint session with Human Rights Representatives)

 


Meet Your Educators

Ian Fellows

Ian is a trade union lawyer who has devoted his career to advocating on behalf of trade unions and working people. Ian is a partner at Ursel Phillips Fellows and Hopkinson LLP, the firm where he has practiced law since commencing his articles with the firm in 1992. He attended the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto and obtained his Bachelor of Laws in 1992.

 

Janet Stewart 

Janet Stewart has been CUSW’s Partner in Learning for 14 years and has designed training for hundreds of Members. She is the person behind Alliance Learning and continues to work with subject matter expert Members to build their online Universities. With over 30 years of experience in the training industry, Janet is in an elite crowd that understands the relationship between solving problems and quality learning experiences for Members and stakeholders.

NOTE: As indicted in the dates provided above, some of the training sessions will be held jointly with the training for CUSW Human Rights Representatives and others.
